How to Measure for a Traverse Rod

Accurate width is only the beginning. A made-to-order traverse system also depends on the mounting surface, return depth, draw direction, panel meeting point, stack location, and installation access.

Before taking measurements

Decide whether the system will mount to the wall or ceiling, whether the drapery will be one-way or center draw, and whether the panels should stack over the glass or beyond the opening.

Core dimensions to record

1. Overall hardware width: the finished system width, not simply the glass width.
2. Mounting height: the location of the track or bracket centerline.
3. Projection: the distance from the mounting surface to the track or pole centerline.
4. Returns: the distance the fabric travels back toward the wall at each end.
5. Obstructions: handles, trim, shades, radiators, cabinetry, beams, and crown molding.
6. Stack area: the wall space available for the opened panels.

Corners, bays, and bends

For a mitered corner or bay, provide a dimensioned plan view with wall lengths and angles. Field templates may be required for irregular construction. Confirm whether the system is fabricated as a continuous bend, separate mitered sections, or joined straight pieces.

One-piece length and shipping

The maximum manufacturable length and the maximum shippable package length are not always the same. Long systems may require a splice or freight shipment even when a longer one-piece profile exists.
